Preface: Tai Ping, Central, Po Hing, Lee Theatre…all Cantonese Operatic Theatres are closed down except the Sunbeam Theatre. The Sunbeam has become the icon of Cantonese Operatic culture in Hong Kong, the Mainland China and overseas. Located in North Point, the Sunbeam has witnessed the changes of Hong Kong for over 30 years. The advantage of convenient transportation attracts interests from lots of parties. Without the support from the government, the owner of the Sunbeam expressed that he would not extend the rental contract after 3 years. Approaching to the “deadline” of the Sunbeam, it’s a high time for us to think about the non-commercial value of Cantonese operatic culture in this society. Is the Sunbeam in any way related to people other than celebrities? We have interviewed performers of the 2 set roles (civilized martial man and young belle), troupe leader, tutors of the youth Cantonese opera class, old opera fans and a Filipino domestic helper.
