After The ‘Art’ You Kidding Me?!

Tracy Lee

As part of the Fotanian Open Studios in January, the exhibition held by CULTaMAP has been successfully concluded. During this exhibition, we were lucky to have got support from enterprises within the Fotan neighbourhood, such as AGL Ltd. and Nutrition@Cup, who provided us with exhibition space, and the Indian Restaurant ASRA, who supplied the opening with delicious food and drinks. Besides, we managed to find in the Fotan factory manufacturing soft toys and plastic bottles, which were showcased together with Hsi Hsi’s bear dolls and artworks by university teachers and students. This is only an experiment for presenting art in Fotan.

We wish the audience would notice that in places other than artists’ studios a lot of innovative artworks are also being created and that it is not only the artists’ privilege to put up exhibition. We have been selecting artworks by students from various universities and high schools and introducing them to the public. CULTaMAP is the first to present works by BU art students Yanz , and has just started contracted cooperation with PolyU design graduates Yvonne Chan and Meng Lau. We are most delighted to learn that their works are all well-received, and they have even been approached by design firm. We sincerely hope that CULTaMAP will become a platform for promoting local young artists.

In this year’s exhibition, CULTaMAP has met a lot of audiences, some of which are old friends from last year’s exhibition. One of them is a high school student from St. Joseph School. “Feel free to read the books and help yourself to the drinks, and don’t forget to tell me which book is your favourite.”I told him. At last he said his choice would be Homeless, the photo album published by SOCO, recording the life of street-sleepers in Hong Kong. So I gave the boy Homeless, and I wish to give out more books in the future.

‘Art’ You Kidding Me also held three artist talks. Friends who didn’t manage to come over may review them in this issue of CULTaMAP: Fiona Lam‘s, records the conversation between shadow dance master Mr. Wong Fai, contemporary artist Leung Mee Ping and BU art student Lee Yuk Shan after the Grand Puppet and Shadow Drama. Jeannie’s The Art of Merchandising in Hong Kong and The Comprador Culture tells how Mr. Oscar Ho interprets the relationship between Chinese compradors in Hong Kong and the cultural identity of Hong Kong through a bowl of Capital soup. To Present or To Represent the Community Culture? - A Dialogue between Chan Chi Tak and Jaspar Lau is Nadia Lo’s documentation of the dialogue between two of my idols. Please keep track of our website www.cultamap.com for video clips from ‘Art’ You Kidding Me.

Apart from Fotopiggie’s and Seven City’s column, CULTaMAP will have a new column by Kenneth Wu from this issue. Kenneth, who is now traveling and working in Australia, will take us to ‘see’ the Australian Cultures and compare the cultural differences between Hong Kong and Australia. And there will be a brand new cartoon column Black Sheep Barn, presented by Yvonne & Meng. Stay tuned!
